What to expect from Christian counseling in Denver?

Denver is a town that despite the pandemic still has a lot of work and life happening. Actually, work has felt more demanding and intense. So has your personal life. It’s like you’ve been in an incubator and the temperature has been rising. Now with the holidays here, you’re even busier, but you know you need to make time for counseling before you burn out and life becomes a hot mess.

You don’t know what truly therapeutic counseling would look like. I am here to help you think through the possibilities. You can advocate for yourself to find a counselor to come up with a treatment plan that moves you toward your goals promptly.

How much will this cost and how long is it going to take?

There is a new federal law in effect that, if you are self-pay or uninsured, to just ask for a good faith estimate for your medical care costs. Mental health care is covered under this law. Your counselor will provide you with the cost of counseling within a certain time frame; my good faith estimate will typically be for six months. I am an out-of-network insurance provider and can give you additional information during your free 15-minute consultation.

I just need to feel better. What do you do that’s different that will give me relief?

We can go in several directions with counseling tools. There is a form of talk therapy that is all about behavior change. You’ve probably heard that your feelings, thoughts, and actions are all connected. Behavior change involves your commitment to taking those weekly steps one at a time. Another form of talk therapy I use is based on the therapeutic relationship. That means the way we interact in the counseling room is a mirror of your other relationships. We will focus on the moment and bring other relationships into the conversation. The last modality I use is mind-/body work for inner healing which is like emotional acupuncture.

As your memories are stirred up in counseling, you may feel worse before you feel better. One thing that leaves you in a better place at the end of each session is having someone who’s attuned to you. That means that you feel heard, seen, and understood. You deserve to be valued.

What do you do that helps my circumstances change?

Your circumstances may or may not change. You’re probably familiar with the Serenity Prayer of AA. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. One of the things you can change is yourself, and if you choose to start here, you are off to a very good start.

If you are still feeling stuck, call me at 720-577-5985 for a free 15-minute consultation. I’d be happy to hear about what is happening and help direct you to the right person. If you are looking for help with addictions and relationships, you can read more about how I can help here.
